Nothing could be easier or produce as many benefits as the simple task of keeping chickens. At Urban Arks we have been keeping chickens for almost two decades and what began as a pastime soon became a way of life… Urban Arks is Irish owned and operated and seeks to encourage the growth of self sustaining homes and communities on a nationwide scale by creating products that help people move towards an idea of self sufficiency. We encourage children of all ages to get into their wellies and get involved with their Garden! There is nothing to beat the taste of your own fresh eggs and four good laying hens will produce as many as a thousand eggs a year. Chickens make great pets and kids love them. Keeping chickens will give children a confidence that can only be gained by an understanding of the natural world and where their food comes from. Anyone with garden space can become involved with Urban Arks, and not only do we offer a quality product, we also offer encouragement and a lifetimes experience to our customers. Here’s how to get started… The ‘Family Ark’ is the ideal starting package for anyone who wants to begin keeping chickens for domestic use. Keeping Chickens is an easy and straightforward task which involves very little effort and pays dividends. As with anything you will learn from experience that the key is organisation. Chickens need a secure run, access to fresh water, a healthy and varied diet (organic if possible), somewhere to lay and somewhere to roost. Chickens are easy to feed because they will eat almost anything they can get a beak on, from your left over dinner to the lowly garden worm and everything in-between. The Urban Ark provides the perfect home for 4-6 chickens. It has a spacious run and high spec nest box. The nest box access door acts as a shelf when opened for your basket, the door from the house to the run is operated by a pull cord and has an attached ramp for the chickens. Finally, there is a back door on the ground level to provide access for feeding. The run is made from welded wire mesh which is impenetrable, even to the mink. Starting packages begin at 380 euro.
